So you picked up this game just recently, and you played F1 2010 to death? I gear my car so that my flying laps with KERS (no DRS) are just below the rev limiter, then make it one notch higher. I use the same ratio in qually as race (those are the FIA rules) so I do suffer a bit in qually. 100% race though means the race matters more.There's a line before the DRS activation point for the race which determines the 1s gap (usually the braking zone on the corner before). It's not the same as the activation point. It's often worth using KERS to bring yourself within the DRS zone. Might be worth mentioning this.
